Birds of Anchor Point

Where the Anchor River empties into Kachemak Bay, creating a rich habitat for bird diversity.

Walking the beach at Anchor Point I spotted a flock of Greater White-Fronted Geese resting along the shoreline. Then a man came along walking an unleashed dog and I knew what was going to happen. I got my camera ready, the dog flushed the flock and I got this shot.

A Merlin is only about the size of a Blue Jay, making it one of the smallest falcons in North America. They often hunt birds nearly their own size and sometimes chase prey through neighborhoods, campgrounds, and parking lots at full speed.

Because of their long legs, Greater Yellowlegs are surprisingly agile hunters. They often run through shallow water chasing small fish and aquatic insects rather than standing still and waiting for prey to come to them.

We got a little snow in Homer one May day. It was cold and wet, and our fingers went numb. But the birds didn’t care, they went right on feeding and flying. Yes, it snows in parts of Alaska in May.
