American Crow

Homer, Alaska

This was the first bird I saw on the first day of the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival in May 2026. At first I wasn’t sure what it was because it seemed so much larger than the crows I’m used to seeing in Alabama. It turned out to be an American Crow, but it was my first hint that even familiar birds can look different in Alaska.

Interesting Fact: American Crows can recognize individual human faces and remember them for years. Researchers have shown that crows can even share information about specific people with other crows, sharing potential threats throughout a local crow population.
