Northern Shoveler

Homer, Alaska

I’ve always thought the Northern Shoveler was a beautiful bird with those rust-colored sides. But it wasn’t until Alaska that I appreciated its namesake. They have a huge bill that looks like a canoe paddle and they literally shovel food from shallow marshes.
