Lapland Longspur
Homer, Alaska
I’ve always been intrigued by the name “Lapland Longspur”. The name gave me an image of a large Arctic bird, something dramatic and hard to miss. Then I finally saw this tiny bird. I couldn’t get good focus on the bird because of the grass, but I finally photographed a Lapland Longspur!
Interesting Fact: During the breeding season, male Lapland Longspurs sing while parachuting back to the ground from high in the air, a display that can continue for several minutes.
