Birds of Kachemak Bay

Kachemak Bay is a birder’s paradise. From the mud flats and beaches surrounding Homer to the fishing docks at the end of Homer Spit the bay attracts a remarkable variety of birds. Here are six that stood out to me during my visit.

Tufted Puffin: Alaska’s most iconic seabird.

Black-Legged Kittiwake: Thousands nest on Alaska’s sea cliffs.

Black Oystercatcher: A bird with a bill built for a shellfish.

Common Murres: Built for Life at Sea

Western Sandpiper: The bird I didn’t expect to remember.

Harlequin Duck: One of nature’s works of art.
