Black-Legged Kittiwake
Homer, Alaska
The Black-Legged Kittiwakes dominate Gull Island. Hundreds were circling overhead the entire time we were there. On the only sunny day of the trip, the birds flashed bright white against sun, creating one of my favorite photographs from Alaska.
Interesting Fact: Unlike most gulls, Black-Legged Kittiwakes build their nests on narrow cliff ledges. Gull Island hosts thousands of birds packed on its rock faces, creating one of Alaska’s most impressive seabird colonies.
