Find the Owl

Eastern Screech Owl Alamo, Texas

I was birding with a group at the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival a couple of years ago when a group leader stopped and pointed up at this tree. Some people saw the owl right away. Many, however, including me, had to have it pointed out. It is so well camouflaged. I’ve shown this photo to some people who just don’t see it until I point out the eyes and the ears.

Speaking of the Rio Grande festival, Wanda and I just registered for this year’s event coming up in November. It will be Wanda’s first time at this festival and we’re really looking forward to it. We were birding in Arizona last year and I asked our guide if he could go anywhere in the country at a chosen time to bird, where and when would that be? Without hesitation he said “South Texas in the winter.” We’ll be there this year!
