Hummingbird Hunt

After a day of hunting hummingbirds here at the Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Festival we were headed to the parking lot to get back into the van.  As so often happens, that’s when the magic happened.  We took one last peak at the hummingbird nest outside the building and for the first time that day, we saw the mother up there feeding her babies.  Then, when she flew to get more food, the babies popped their heads up to look around.  It was so precious.  It was my favorite hummingbird photo of the day.

That tiny little nest is woven together with spider silk.  That allows the nest to keep the babies snug and warm when they are first born, but then the silk lets the nest expand as they get older.
