Footsie
Common Gallinules Lake Apopka, Florida
We were birding along the shore of Lake Apopka where thick lily pads provide perfect habitat for Common Gallinules. Suddenly we heard an awful screeching coming from beneath the aluminum fishing pier we were standing on. I raised my camera just as two gallinules burst out from under the pier, kicking and splashing as they fought their way through the lilies.
Looking at this frozen moment, though, it almost looks like they are playing footsie instead of fighting.
Tomorrow I’m off to southeastern Arizona in search of hummingbirds, trogons, and whatever surprises the desert has in store. Stay tuned for the photos!
